Frequently Asked Questions

When can I remove a tree in Bundoora?

As part of Darebin council, anyone living in Bundoora needs to check with the council if a tree can be removed. There are two situations in which you may need a tree removal permit.

  1. Your property has an existing planning permit, Vegetation Protection Overlay (VPO), Environmental Significance Overlay (ESO), or Heritage Overlay (HO).
  2. The tree you want to remove is classified as a significant tree. A significant tree is a tree which has a single or combined trunk circumference greater than 100 cm, measured at 1.5 metres above ground level, and is taller than 8 metres.

How do I get a tree removal permit?

You'll need to fill out a Tree Protection Application Form. These forms can be tricky to negotiate, but luckily we have plenty of experience in applying for tree removal permits in Darebin council. Contact us, and we'll get the process started for you.

What are the penalties for not getting a permit?

If you don't get a tree removal permit and continue to carry out works on a tree, you'll receive a summons to attend court. If found guilty, you could be fined up to $2000, plus receive orders to pay the council's legal costs in prosecuting you.

Do you need a permit to prune trees?

You only need a permit to prune trees if the tree has a single or combined trunk circumference greater than 125 cm, measured at 1.5 metres above ground level, and the tree is taller than 8 metres high.
